Moss library gets $28,700 gift

Ferebee Grant gives library capital fund a boost

The Moss Memorial library expansion project got another boost last week when the Percy B. Ferebee Endowment presented the library with a check for $28,700. The library fund now has more than $300,000 leaving somewhat more than $100,000 to be raised before construction on the expansion can begin.

The proposed addition calls for a Genealogy Room,a  multipurpose work room and a  Friends of the Library Bookstore.

Currently, the library bookstore is housed in an older building across the street which will require major repair in the near future if it’s use is to be continued. By including space for the bookstore in an expanded library will eliminate the need for costly repairs to the old building.

Librarian Mary Fonda says as state and local funds get squeezed tighter and tighter as anticipated in the near future, having a profitable used bookstore to provide extra needed capital in support of library programs is becoming more and more necessary.

A separate Genealogy Room will provide a secure space to house and archive Family histories for patron doing research as well as an area for conducting related workshops.

Over the years through fund raising efforts, the Friends of the Library have purchased land (as it became available) across from the library to provide for future growth.

The Friends of the Library Bookstore provided the library with an extra income of about $28,000. These funds were used to purchase  books, computers, supplies, a copy machine and extra land for future parking.

As times get harder, it is anticipated that libraries will see more and mored use by the public. Already, there has been an increase of 28 percent of usage levels during the past year.
