Letter to the Editor

This letter is one I have put off writing but cannot let this go any longer without saying something. Mr. James Davis is way off base in his thinking about our new elementary school and I for one am sick and tired of hearing how dumb and stupid our School Board and School Superintendent are.  I appreciate everything Clay County Schools do.  We all as a community worked very hard along with the teachers and staff of Clay County Schools to make our school the best in North Carolina.  We can even compete with the nation and the world.  Mr. Davis you have no children in our school so butt out.  Most of us are all willing to pay taxes for the services we receive.  Our youngest daughter graduated from Hayesville High School and we now have grandchildren attending our wonderful school.  We have the very best teachers and staff that can be found anywhere around.  We are overcrowded and are in need of more classroom space.  Moving the Superintendent’s office is not an option.  We waited and worked a long time to get them out of the cottage with the trailers attached and the moss on the roof which was holding out as much water possible.  Have you spent a day with the children in the trailers especially a rainy  day?  It is not a very pleasant experience.  I do also beg to disagree with you that the teaching environment is not conducive to good learning. It works wonders.  Good Schools also attract business. Many people decide to live in Clay County because of our great school .Not everyone in Clay County agrees with you.  The  fact is most do not.  You do not speak for me.  We need to get the facts out and the truth.  I was appalled at the people who voted  down the quarter of a cent sales tax in this last election.  That would have cost us 25 cents on $100.00 we spent. Now our property tax rates will have to increase.  However we have one of the lowest tax rates  in the State.  Blessings are all around us.  We really need to get behind our elected officials the Board of Commissioners and School Board and let them know we support them and their goals. Don’t let Clay County Schools fall behind.

Pat Jordan, Clay County
