Valley River Civitan Club of Andrews Pancake Breakfast
The Valley River Civitan Club of Andrews is stirring up a pancake breakfast on Saturday, June 19, from 7-10 am at Elsie’s Restaurant on Main Street in Andrews. Tickets are $6 for adults and $3.50 for kids 10 and under, available at the door. Proceeds will go towards community service and help for the disabled.
Civitan’s mission is to build good citizenship. It is a volunteer organization dedicated to serving individual and community needs with an emphasis on helping people with developmental disabilities. Their flagship project is the Civitan International Research Center at the University of Alabama in Birmingham which researches causes and potential cures for developmental disabilities and brain diseases such as Alzheimer’s.
The Andrews club with 25 members, along with over 100 other Civitan clubs in NC, supports the Victory Junction Camp near Ashboro for children with chronic or life-threatening diseases. the Civisaurus coloring book (promoting healthy choices) which is distributed to every kindergartener in NC, and provides help to the Boys and Girls Home in eastern NC.
The Valley River Civitans dedicate most of their fundraising to supporting local needs. The club has recently provided 10 flowering cherry trees to improve the drive to the Andrews High School. These trees and others to be planted in the future will be dedicated to the school’s Civitan Scholarship recipients with the name of each recipient on a plaque at the tree.
Civitans also have adopted a section of highway on Business 19 and Junaluska Road for litter pickup. They support Industrial Opportunities clients with social activities and serve as Special Olympics “coaches”. They cheer Carolina Care Home Assisted Living Center residents with holiday parties. They have donated equipment to Andrews Recreation Center for T-Ball, provided coats for kids, repaired a deck for someone in need, and sent care packages to troops. Civitans are also known for their Clergy Appreciation program each February. Wherever there is a need, Civitans are called and respond to help the community.
The Valley River Civitan Club is always looking for people interested in promoting good citizenship and helping the community. Please call Anita Davis at 321-9989 to find out more.
