Rep. Shuler Announces Federal Heating Aid Coming to North Carolina
Washington, D.C. – The Obama administration released $15.6 million to North Carolina for emergency heating assistance following a request from Congressman Heath Shuler for additional federal funds.
The Health and Human Services Department released $490 million in LIHEAP contingency funds to U.S. states, territories and tribes on Wednesday. Congressman Shuler and more than 100 other House members sent a letter to President Obama on January 8th seeking the release of additional Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP) funds. Last year, about 384,000 North Carolina families received LIHEAP aid.
“People in Western North Carolina have been hard hit this winter by both a bad economy and record cold temperatures. Too many North Carolinians have to make the hard choice of whether to pay utility bills or buy basic necessities. These funds will allow thousands of families and seniors to heat their homes and still be able to buy food and medicine, ” said Congressman Heath Shuler (D-Waynesville).
People interested in applying for LIHEAP funds should contact the LIHEAP Clearinghouse’s National Energy Assistance Referral project by calling toll free 1-866-674-6327 or by sending an email to energyassistance@ncat.org.

As our elected representative, I would like for once to see where you have saved the citizens money. The money you so gleefully spend, is taxpayers money or in this case, an IOU for our children. The Fed government does not produce anything but cost to deliver services. It is true that there are good expenditures, like this one appears to be, but can we truly afford many of these expenditures you so graciously acquire for us?
The cost for the Federal government, of which you are a part, to deliver services and (our taxes) money back to us is immense and extremely inefficient. I guess the typical sentiment among the “new” elite ruling class is to give someone their own money and to assume that they are too stupid to know they are being bought.
I ask you stop the spending. Show us where you truly represent the conservative district that sent you to Congress. A recent quote in a local paper had you praising President Obama. While I represent a more conservative view of our country and political system, I was waiting to see if the fresh promise of change that President Obama promised was realized. Unfortunately the President and the Congress are seeking to implement changes that are (in my opinion) politics as usual (actually the most sinister I have seen since Nixon), rapidly moving us toward a socialist form of government, and financially bringing us to a brink of disaster for which we may not survive.
Thank you would praise the “great” job that the President is doing, shows how out of touch you are with your constituents. In a time when the popularity of the Congress is at a ridiculous level of disdain, why would you choose to just “be a part of the country club” and dance to the tune that Pelosi plays for you. Do you really think that you can buy our loyalty in Western NC with our own money?
