John Nix and the Country Cousins in concert

Country CousinsOne of Union County’s musical institutions over the years has been the Nix Brothers and the Country Cousins band. Many people remember when the traffic would be stopped on the square, and square dances were held in the street. The music was supplied by the John and Clayton Nix and the Country Cousins. When John Cable opened the “Oprey in the Wildwood” on the Young Harris highway, the music was supplied by the Country Cousins. For fifty years, the band has been furnishing music to north Georgia. The band, from the first event, has been as much a part of the Sorghum Festival and the syrup, itself.
Time has taken its toll on the band. Brothers Clayton and Cranford Nix have health problems that don’t allow them to perform. John, however, is still carrying on the tradition, and there are still cousins to perform with him. Bobbby Saxon and his son for instance are cousins of John, and music was always a part of their family history as well. Bobby’s Father, Vaughn Saxon, played in his youing days with country music legend, Charlie Monroe’s, band.
The Union County Historical Society is proud to host John and his current incarnation of the Country Cousins in concert at the Old Courthouse on the Square in Blairsville. The program will begin at 7:00 p.m. on Friday, October 9.
There is no admission charge; the musicians donate their time and talents. Voluntary donations to the maintenance fund are always welcomed and appreciated.
